Bein elevators operate on three primary mechanical principles:
Wedge: The tapered blade is driven into the periodontal ligament (PDL) space, shearing fibers and expanding the socket.
Lever: The instrument uses the adjacent bone or tooth as a fulcrum to elevate the root out of its socket.
Wheel and Axle: Rotational force is applied to twist the root and break its ligament attachments.
Working End (Blade): Features a thin, sharp, and slightly concave/spoon-shaped tip designed for precise access into tight spaces.
Shank: A rigid shaft that transfers force from the handle to the blade.
