A Gouge Elevator (often referred to as a Coupland Elevator in dentistry) is a surgical instrument used to loosen a tooth from the periodontal ligament, elevate the free gingiva, and luxate roots to ease extraction while minimizing trauma to the surrounding bone.

 

Design: Features a uniquely shaped tip with one convex side (facing the bone) and one concave side (facing the root surface) with a flat end.
